Azure Storage Discovery GA

The past few weeks I’ve been trying out Azure Storage Discovery, which went GA yesterday (October 25).

Combined with the Storage Center (which aggregates all storage resources), this gives you a nice overview of what you have available, what is compliant, the evolution of your assets etc.

Storage Discovery

In the past this required multiple locations (Azure Advisor, metrics per resource etc). Certainly a big step forward for your governance and cost management.

How we used it

The largest impact in our first days was to quickly spot the storage accounts that seemed a lot larger than expected due to historical data being kept, multiple copies of deploys for web apps hosted on blob storage, … but also see which accounts grow faster (either size or document count) than expected and act accordingly.

Next steps

Of course, having more than 50% non-compliant is never good, so the team is in progress in solving these. Some quick wins, some harder.

Having a good overview of all your storage resources also shows you some patterns and helps you in reducing duplication.

You can’t act if you don’t know (measure). Even the free tier already gives you a lot of insights to get started.
